Wish 84

I can't believe it has taken me so long to post this one. Anyway, I "met" Michelle thru our blogs. She too is adopting from China and is just a few months behind us in line. Though she does not currently live in TN, her family does. Lots of very neat connections.

I love her two squares.... the girly pink Pink Panther square and the adorable angels on the blue square. Thanks so much Michelle! (And be sure to check out her blog HERE.)

Here's her wish:
Believe...
...in God~ He loves you and will never forsake you
...in yourself ~ You are filled with strength, courage and compassion.
Share these gifts with those around you.
...in your forever family~ They have waited so patiently for you
....in friendship~Surround yourself with positive people
that will encourage you to be your best
...in true love~The kind that makes you feel complete. This is life's greatest joy.

There's still time....

Almost a year ago we sent out a little letter asking for your help on a project. We still are a few squares short on our goal for our 100 wishes quilt (see we need 100). We have received 81 WONDERFUL squres so far. And are deeply touched by the squares, the wishes and the creativity. It means so much to us to read these and knowing the time you put into them. We hope to get started on this during the summer (I'm taking a quilting class next month), so if you have your fabric/wish please feel free to send it to us. We can't wait to hit the 100 wishes goal.

**I didn't get letters out to everyone like I had hoped. I've just been relying on the blog to get out our "wish" for help. So if you're reading this PLEASE PLEASE join us on this project. Click HERE for the complete details and then email us (chrisjulietu@gmail.com) for our address!

Wish 81

My friend Heather gave us this square/wish tonight. I love it! It's very preppy. And Heather is definitely a "pink" girl, well "pink and green", this will always make me think of her. She wrote a sweet letter. She also included the verse Jeremiah 29:11-13:
11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
AND we received this beautiful blanket made out of the same fabric. Her mom made this for us. I think this is our first real blanket. It's so soft, I can't wait to use it. We love it! Thank you so much.

Wish 59

This is wish #2 from Suzanne. Suzanne and I have known each other for years and spent many summers playing together when I would visit my Grandparents in CA. She and have have exchanged letters for almost 20 years (wow, are we that old!?!). The square is 2 fabrics: one is Cookie Monster, her favorite character and there is yellow fabric on the sides, this is from a dress her mom made her when she was little. The wish is a long letter to Ella telling her how Suzanne knows me & Chris and talks about all the things she wishes for her. And ended it with a few quotes:

"Where there is great love, there are always wishes" ~ Willa Cather

"Some boys take a beautiful girl, and hide her away from the rest of the world. I wanna be the one to walk in the sun. Oh girls, they wanna have fun." ~ Cyndi Lauper

Wish 58

This is wish #1 from my friend, Suzanne. (Grandpa's neighbor) We spent many summers in CA playing from the time we were little kids. She & Chris share a love of Star Wars, so this is very appropriate.
Naturally the quote says "May the force be with you".

Wish 57

Just when I was thinking we hadn't had any squares in awhile....3 today! This is from my Mrs. Schwabe, she is my friend's mom AND my Grandpa's neighbor for many many years. She was a lifesaver for the last few years my Grandpa was in CA. We couldn't of made it without her!

The fabric is great, this is our first red, white and blue one! Thanks so much!!!

Quilt Pattern

I think I have decided on the pattern for our 100 wishes quilt. And I think it can be used no matter the # of squares we get so if we're under or over on the wishes it should be okay. Of course, I could change my mind, but this has been the pattern for a few months so we'll say this is it....

Wish 56

Here is the 2nd one from today. This is from Chris's Aunt Leila (who had the 90th birthday a few weeks ago). She has been so excited about our quilt (and adoption) and mentions it every time we see her. She said she found the perfect fabric and said she had the perfect saying to go with it. It turned out great!Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white
They are precious in his site
Jesus loves the children of the world.
With love to Ella,
Great-Great Aunt Leila

Wish 55

We were so excited to come home today to 2 squares/wishes from our family. This one is from Chris's cousin Barbara. We love the animal fabric and what a great verse!
We love it, and Thank You!! All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.

Wishes 49, 50, 51, 52

What a great way to start the morning, these 4 squares were on my desk this morning. They are from my friend Kendra (and her family). Two of them have Holly Hobby on them (I had a HH doll when I was little!) One of the squares has "Love" on it. Kendra's wish is 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. We're learning the first part as we wait... Love is patient.
Thanks Kendra!

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient and kind;
Love is not jealous or boastful;
It is not arrogant or rude.

Love does not insist on its own way;
It is not irritable or resentful;
It does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right.
Love bears all things,
Believes all things,
Hopes all things,
Endures all things.

Love never fails.

Wish 48

Wish 48 comes from Michelle (and Eddie, Meryl & Jack). It's absolutely perfect.
Included was John 14:1-3:
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
Michelle also wrote a special letter to Ella. It was perfect! She mentions that this fabric was used to decorate Meryl's room before she was born, and then she talks about how they've been preparing for Ella's arrival long before she was born, and how Jesus has prepared a home too. It was beautiful! Thanks Michelle!!!

Just a few helpful things to assist you with your wish….

*When you mail the wish to us, it’s okay to fold the fabric up. Don’t worry about it getting it wrinkled.

*I'm sure some are stressing about what the wish looks like; you can make it as pretty or plain as you like. Pretty is just extra, what we really are excited about is to read what everyone’s wish is for Ella. The words are what we’re going to treasure years from now.

*We haven’t set a deadline on the wishes, I figure we have over a year or so to collect them and we want to hit 100 before we even think about getting started. So take your time.

*Speaking of the 100 wishes, don’t worry if yours is the 101st wish. We’re not going to leave anyone’s out. We just hope to hit 100, & anything above that is a huge gift!

Again, thank you so much for taking part of this special project!

WHEN GOD CREATED LITTLE GIRLS
God made the world with its towering trees
Majestic mountains and restless seas
Then paused and said,
"It needs one more thing,
Someone to laugh and dance and sing
To walk in the woods and gather flowers
T o commune with nature in quiet hours."
So God made little girls
With laughing eyes and bouncing curls
With joyful hearts and infectious smiles
Enchanting ways and feminine wiles.
And when He'd completed the task He'd begun,
He was pleased and proud of the job He'd done,
For the world when seen through a little girl's eyes
Greatly resembles Paradise.

Ella needs Squares

February 23, 2007

Dear Family and Friends,

As many of you are aware, Chris and I began the process last summer to adopt a baby girl from China. To keep busy during the wait, we have decided to work on a project with which we need your assistance. We would be honored to have you participate in creating a “Bai Jia Bei”, otherwise known as a “100 Good Wishes Quilt”.

In parts of China, when a baby is born, family and friends donate fabric pieces with a wish for the baby to the child's mother. She then makes a quilt from the fabric. It is said that the luck, energy and good wishes from all of the families and friends who contributed, surround the child when she is wrapped in the quilt. The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation. With your help we would like to honor this tradition from our daughter’s homeland.

There are so many good reasons to make this quilt for our daughter, tradition being one of them. We are hoping to find many ways to keep her connected to Chinese culture. Another great reason is that our daughter will someday be able to see how much she was thought about and wanted long before she came into our family.

Most quilts are made with 100% cotton fabrics, however, the fabric can be from anywhere: an old fabric that has special meaning to you, or a new fabric that inspires you. I am hoping you will be able to find a piece of fabric in your craft supplies, old decorating projects or among old clothes you no longer wear. Please do not go to a lot of trouble.

Here’s what we would like you to do:

  1. Cut one 9” x 9” square of fabric that you like.

  2. On a separate piece of paper/card, put a scrap of fabric and include your “good wish card”. Please also include your name.

Your “good wish card” can be as simple or as elaborate as you’d like (for you creative and scrapbooking folks, no bigger than 8x10). Your wish can be something you wrote or a favorite bible verse, poem, lyric, quote or anything that strikes your fancy. If the fabric you choose has special significance, please share its history. Please remember to sign your wish!

The good wishes and scrap of fabric will be incorporated into a scrapbook so she can look back at her quilt and match the squares up with the wishes. Looking through the book, she will know how many people were thinking of her before she was even born.

Collecting 100 squares may be a challenge. We know you all have very busy schedules, but we hope you will be able to help us create this special keepsake. Your thoughtfulness, time, and good wishes mean so much to us and we know it will mean just as much to our daughter someday. We have a long wait and hope this will help us feel closer to our baby.

Love,

Julie & Chris
